Getting started with DNJ Dilemma

Standard Edition

Logging on
When the DNJ Dilemma page first loads, you'll see this dialog box. You can type your name in (or leave it as 'Guest'); this name will be used in the game display, and included in game results tables. To log in as a different user, just reload the game page.

Game Setup
Next, you'll see the game setup panel (right). This always appears in between games, and allows you to choose players and strategies.

To play against the computer: choose 'You' as the left-hand player (this makes the 'Left-strategy' and 'Play..Games' fields disappear). You can now choose the Right-hand (computer's) strategy - either 'Auto Selection' to let the computer choose for itself, or one of the options in the drop-down list (below).

To let the computer play against itself: choose 'Computer' as the Left-hand player. You can then choose left- and right-hand player strategies - in both cases, you can specify 'Auto Selection' to let the computer choose its own strategy, or make a choice from the drop-down list.

Multiple games: In 'self-play' (computer vs computer) mode, you can also type a number into the 'Play..Games' field - the computer will now play that number of games using your choice of strategies (note - if you've chosen 'Auto Selection' for a player, then the computer will choose a new strategy for each game).

High speed play: Normally, the game plays at a 'human' pace - computer strategies will take up to five seconds to decide which card to play in each round, and turned-over cards remain visible for a few seconds between rounds. Checking 'High Speed Play' eliminates these delays. This option is checked automatically in self-play mode, and unchecked in manual mode. You can override both defaults.

The setup panel buttons: Pressing Start Game hides the setup panel, and starts a game (or games) using the current setup panel options (you can get back to the setup panel at any time by pressing the Abandon button on the main game area. The Exit button closes the DNJ Dilemma browser window. Stats loads the DNJ Dilemma Results page in a separate window (click here for more details).

Tournament Edition

Using the Tournament edition of DNJ Dilemma is very similar to using the Standard edition - only the setup panel is different.

Here's the Tournament edition setup panel:

In the Tournament edition, the left-hand player (called the 'Tournament Player') is always the computer. There's no auto-selection of the Tournament Player's strategy - you always choose a strategy from the drop-down list.

The 'Opponent(s)' drop-down list lets you choose one or more strategies for the Tournament Player strategy to play against. Choosing 'All strategies' plays the Tournament Player against all the strategies in turn (including its own). Alternatively, you can choose one or more strategies from the list (CTRL-Click to select multiple strategies).

The Play..Games box lets you specify how many games the Tournament Player should play against each opponent. Its default value is 10.
