Battle of the Bags

6 Jul 2000 - The verdicts are in. Although at first the delegates disliked this year's bag and thought it was perhaps a little too "space age" (in a 1980s kind of way), it seems that familiarity actually breeds familiarity, rather than contempt. In short, that darn old silver thing is growing on everyone. But then I suppose if you spend five days at a stretch with a new piece of luggage, which you come to associate with all your worldly goods, you inevitably do grow to like it.
I dunno, I still prefer last years bag to this one. Last year we had a simple black design with the barest minimum of badges, this year we have a huge textured silver affair with more badges than is considered seemly in well-tempered geek society.
So what's geek chic at this TechEd? Okay, well the '99 black bag is a better bet to be seen with at this TechEd than the new one. This is the golden rule: If you want to look cool and seem like you've been around the coolest thing is still last years bag/T-shirt/hat etc. If you're even more ostentatious then the TechEd '98 stuff is even better.
As we detailed last year, the '98 bag was the coolest of all, being a brown leather and webbing combo, and still holds up well. The coolest people at the show are sporting the brown bags, for sure.
But here's a tip: the best bags are the Microsoft laptop bags which can be bought at the kiosk in the foyer for 60fl. They look EXACTLY like the TechEd '98 bag, lack all forms of badges and logos, and they are much more stylish than any other delegate bags. Cooler still is the TechEd 2000 bag from the US, which as we said before is one of the best. But why would you go to both TechEd in the US and Europe? Glutton for punishment? Or just a bag collector? It's a tough call...

Missed Last year's bags?
